Garden City holds off Beavers in defensive battle
GARDEN CITY, Kan. – Points were at a premium on Saturday afternoon for both the Pratt Community College Women's Basketball team and Garden City Community College. The home standing Broncbusters claimed the 69-54 victory over the Beavers.
PCC (5-2, 1-1) stayed right with GCC (6-1, 1-1) through three of the four quarters, with GCC holding the slight 53-50 edge in quarters one, three and four. The difference ended up being the second quarter in which the Broncbusters outscored the Beavers, 16-4.
It was a defensive battle throughout with the teams combining for 64 turnovers. PCC connected on almost 50 percent from the field (18-37) and went 16-22 (72.7) from the foul line. GCC went 24-62 (38.1) from the field, 7-27 (25.9) from three and 14-25 (56) at the foul line. The Beavers only attempted five from distance, making two (40).
The Broncbusters opened the game on a 5-0 spurt over the first four minutes of the contest. Tiffany Singleton connected on two from the line to provide the first points for the Beavers. Kalani Brock continued the scoring for PCC, hitting back-to-back layups to push the Beavers in front at 6-5 at the 4:40 mark of the opening quarter. It would end up being an 8-0 run after Amaya Pierre-Jerome sunk two from the line.
Brock continued her big opening frame with two more from the line at the 2:36 mark had PCC out to their largest lead of 12-8. GCC closed the quarter on a 5-2 run to close the gap to 14-13 through 10 minutes.
It was a struggle for either team to score over the first five minutes of the second quarter with GCC holding the slight 5-2 edge for the 18-16 advantage. The pressure continued from the Broncbusters before halftime, reeling off 11 of the final 13 points to take the 29-18 lead into the locker rooms.
Trailing by 14 early in the third quarter, Brock went back to work converting a pair of layups before Polla Balint closed the 6-0 run with her own layup that had the deficit down to 32-24 at the 7:31 mark.
GCC pushed the lead back into double-figures and after two at the line from Jerome-Pierre trimmed the deficit back to 11, the Broncbusters tallied the final four points of the third quarter to close the frame with the 47-32 lead.
PCC would get as close as 12 over the final 10 minutes, first on a three-pointer by Emilia Borissova just 47 seconds in and then on a layup by Nela Charynek at the 7:54 mark to leave the GCC lead at 49-37. The Broncbusters outscored the Beavers 20-17 over the final eight minutes to claim the 69-54 victory.
Brock led all-scorers with 16 points, going 6-11 from the field and added five rebounds. Balint reached double-figures with 12 points on 5-9 shooting, while adding three rebounds and two assists. Borissova chipped in seven points and Singleton added six points.
Sojhna Ndiaye led GCC with 15 points on 6-14 shooting and six rebounds. Luana Luz collected 14 points on 5-10 shooting and Marshea Fisher had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
PCC will return home to host Butler CC on Tuesday nightinside the Beaver Dome starting at 5:30 p.m.
