PRATT, Kan. – The Pratt Community College Baseball team has recorded multiple walk-off wins this season at home and added another one on Thursday. The Beavers went to extra innings in game one before claiming the 5-4 win in 10 innings. PCC almost rallied to take the doubleheader, but Colby Community College held on for the 6-5 win in game two to split the KJCCC doubleheader.
Game One: Pratt CC 5, Colby CC 4
In the first game of the day, Pratt CC (11-27, 3-15) broke through first with a Colby Gomez RBI groundout in the opening frame for the 1-0 lead.
Colby CC (13-26, 6-16) came back with three runs in the second to take the 3-1 lead.
The Beavers fought back to tie the game at three in the fourth inning with Ronald Woods tripling down the right field line to bring in Gomez and then Tyler Jeffries doubled to left to score Woods to tie the game.
With the teams tied at three after seven innings, the game entered extra innings. After neither team scored in the eighth, Colby CC broke through first with a run in the top of the ninth. Down to their last out, Owen Schmidt delivered for the Beavers hitting a tying RBI single up the middle to score Johran Porter and send the game to the 10th inning.
In the 10th inning, the Beavers posted yet another walk-off win as Landon Cochran singled up the middle to score Gomez for the 5-4 victory.
Each team tallied 14 hits, with Schmidt, Gomez, Nate Lodewyks, and Cochran all recording two hits apiece. On the mound, Isaiah Henderson was strong in relief, tossing four innings and allowing just one earned run. Josh Morelli collected the win (1-6), pitching a scoreless 10th inning.
Game Two: Colby CC 6, Pratt CC 5
Game two was yet another close contest, with both teams getting on the scoreboard early. In the first inning, the Trojans plated two runs on a two-run homer. The Beavers answered in the home half when Gomez singled to center to score Gunner Hewitt.
Colby CC tallied a big fourth inning, scoring four runs, all with two outs, to extend to a 6-1 advantage. In the home half of the fourth inning, PCC got a run back when Ethan Perry walked with the bases loaded for the RBI.
The Beavers continued to chip away, getting a run in the fifth when Eli Patrick doubled to left-center to score Schmidt. Then, in the sixth, Tyler Jeffries laced a triple to right field to score Cochran. Hewitt then followed with an RBI single to score Jeffries to bring the Beavers to within a run at 6-5.
Down to their last at-bat in the seventh, the Beavers made things interesting. With runners on first and second and two outs, Hewitt ripped a line drive to center that ended up being right at the center fielder who recorded the final out and preserve the 6-5 win for Colby CC.
Colby CC held the 9-8 edge in hits, with Schmidt posting two hits for the Beavers. On the mound, Laken Kelley was strong in relief, pitching three scoreless innings and allowed just one hit.
Pratt CC and Colby CC will resume their four-game series on Saturday in Colby with the doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
