Beavers record pair of walk-off hits to take two from Garden City
PRATT, Kan. – The Pratt Community College Baseball team picked up a pair of impressive walk-off wins on Thursday against Garden City Community College. The Beavers rallied for eight runs in the bottom of the seventh to take game one, 11-9. Then in the nightcap, PCC erased an early 10-run deficit and scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth for the walk-off win, 16-15.
 
Game One: Pratt CC 11, Garden City 9
 
Garden City CC (14-23, 6-12) opened the scoring with three runs in the first inning. After an Owen Schmidt solo home run got the Beavers (10-24, 2-12) on the board in the home half of the first, the BroncBusters plated five in the third and another in the fourth to open a 9-1 lead.
 
Landon Cochran helped PCC inch closer with a two-run home run in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to six at 9-3. The score would remain that way into the seventh.
 
Colby Gomez got the scoring started in the frame with a two-run single to center. Cochran walked with the bases loaded and then Carter Allen followed with a bases loaded walk to leave the score at 9-7. Gunner Hewitt ended the game on the next pitch, as he drilled the first pitch over the right field fence for a walk-off grand slam to send the Beavers to the 11-9 victory.
 
Each team tallied 10 hits with Gomez leading the way with three hits. Hewitt and Schmidt added two hits apiece. Hewitt posted four RBI, with Cochran adding three and Gomez with two.
 
On the mound, Jackson Feggi was strong in relief, tossing four innings to get the win (1-1), allowing just one earned run and two hits.
 
Game Two: Pratt CC 16, Garden City 15
 
PCC opened the scoring in game two with Hewitt taking up where he left off. The first pitch of the bottom of the first was sent over the center field fence by Hewitt for the 1-0 lead.
GCC answered with seven runs in the second inning. Nate Lodewyks drove in a run in the home half of the second and then Johran Porter scored on a heads up play from third leaving the lead at 7-3 for the Broncbusters.
 
GCC added a run in the third and five in the fourth to stretch the lead to 10 at 13-3.
 
Schmidt helped start the comeback with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to 13-6. GCC tallied a run in the sixth, but PCC answered with three in the home half. Schmidt singled through the right side for an RBI, Gomez reached on a fielder's choice RBI and then Jabin Moore hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring the Beavers to within five at 14-9.
 
GCC plated a run in the seventh to open a 15-9 lead. PCC came right back with four in the home half. Hewitt reached on an RBI fielder's choice, Gomez recorded an RBI single to right-center and then Cochran reached on a fielding error by the right fielder that scored two runs and left PCC down just two at 15-13.
That set the scene for another walk-off in the bottom of the ninth.
 
Moore plated the first run of the inning with an RBI sacrifice fly and then with two outs and runners on first and second, Porter delivered. Porter hit the first pitch down the left field line for a double that scored both Gomez and pinch-runner Aiden McNulty for the walk-off 16-15 victory.
 
GCC held the 20-12 edge in hits with Gomez and Schmidt leading the Beavers with three hits apiece. Hewitt and Lodewyks added two-hit games. Schmidt drove in four runs.
 
On the mound, Isaiah Henderson was big in relief as he tossed three innings to get the win (1-0), allowing no runs on just three hits.
 
PCC, having won five straight, will travel to Garden City on Saturday to resume their series with the Broncbusters with another doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
