Beavers rally with seven-run seventh inning to split with Allen County
PRATT, Kan. – The Pratt Community College Baseball team fought back with a furious seventh inning rally, plating seven runs to storm back and gain the split against Allen County Community College on Thursday afternoon at Stanion Field. The Beavers rallied for the 11-10 win in game two, after the Red Devils won game one, 13-9.
 
 
Game one: Allen County 13, Pratt CC 9
 
Allen County (13-16) jumped out to the 8-1 lead after five innings and then went in front 12-1 entering the bottom of the sixth. The Beavers (6-24) started the rally in the home half of the sixth, plating seven runs. Jabin Moore, Brady Boomsma, Alex Germanos, and Gunner Hewitt all delivered RBI hits to help trim the deficit to 12-8. Allen County was able to hold on in the seventh, as despite an RBI sacrifice fly from Boomsma, the Red Devils claimed the 13-9 victory.
 
Allen County held the 11-8 edge in hits, with Boomsma leading the Beavers with two hits. Hewitt, Boomsma and Germanos all had two RBI. On the mound, Sutter Balog started, taking the loss (0-3), after striking out six in three innings and allowing three runs (two earned). Josh Morelli tossed two-thirds of scoreless relief in the seventh.
 
 
Game two: Pratt CC 11, Allen County 10
 
Game two was a pitcher's dual throughout the first five innings. Thomas Harmsworth went five innings for the Beavers, striking out eight and allowing six runs. Miller Tavaglione went six innings for the Red Devils, striking out eight and allowing four earned runs.
 
Allen County held the 2-0 lead after two innings and the Beavers tied it with two in the home half of the third with RBI hits from Owen Schmidt and Eli Patrick to leave it 2-2 after three.
 
The Red Devils went back in front with a run in the fifth and then added six in the sixth. PCC came back with two runs in the sixth with a Ronald Woods RBI infield single and Colby Gomez RBI double which left Allen County holding the 9-4 lead entering the seventh.
 
Allen County added a run in the top of the seventh to take the 10-4 lead to the home half of the seventh. In the Beavers' last at-bat, PCC went to work. Carter Allen started the rally with a bases loaded walk for the RBI. Woods singled to left to bring in another run. Boomsma walked with the bases loaded for another RBI to trim the deficit to three at 10-7. Then, as the catcher threw the ball back to the pitcher, the ball got away and, on the error, Allen scored and Woods advanced to third. Johran Porter stole second and on the play, the ball got away for another error to bring in Woods to leave the deficit at one. Gomez hit an RBI single to left-center to tie the game and set the scene for Nate Lodewyks. Lodewyks hit the 2-2 pitch on a line to right-center to score Gomez with the winning run at 11-10.
 
PCC held the 12-11 edge in hits with Lodewyks going 3-4 with two runs scored. Patrick, Woods and Gomez all had two hit games. Woods and Gomez had two RBI apiece. On the mound, following the strong start by Harmsworth, Lucas Verhoeven worked the final two-thirds of the seventh, allowing no runs to claim the win (1-0).
 
Pratt will continue their non-conference series with Allen County this Saturday with another doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on the road in Iola.
