PRATT, Kan. – Owen Schmidt delivered not once, but twice to lift the Pratt Community College baseball team to a pair of exciting wins over Fort Scott Community College on Thursday afternoon at Stanion Field. Schmidt's walk-off single pushed the Beavers to the 6-5 win in game one and then he did even better in the nightcap lacing a walk-off bases-clearing double for the 11-10 win in game two.
PCC (4-0) opens the season with four straight wins, all at home, and in the process, head coach Todd Reller reached his 100th victory leading the Beavers.
The first innings were big on Thursday for the Beavers, as Pratt Community College scored five total runs over the two games in the opening frame.
In game one, after a scoreless top of the first inning for Fort Scott (0-2), PCC tallied three runs in the home half. Aiden McNulty got the scoring started with a solo home run to right field. After a wild pitch brought home Landon Cochran, Klayton Glaspy closed the inning with a sacrifice fly for the 3-0 lead.
Colby Gomez tallied the second home run of the opening game with his solo shot in the third inning and then McNulty pushed the advantage back to three at 5-2 with his running scoring single to right in the fourth inning.
The Greyhounds made a push, collecting two runs in the sixth and then tied the game with a solo home run in the seventh.
That set the stage for Schmidt's heroics. With runners at the corners following a McNulty walk and single by Gomez, Schmidt ripped a single to left to score the winning run, sending the Beavers to the 6-5 victory.
Gomez led the team with three hits, while McNulty and Alex Germanos each tallied two hit games. McNulty drove in a pair of runs. On the mound, Sutter Balog started and got the no decision, tossing three innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out four. Josh Morelli worked the next three innings allowing two runs (one earned) before Ryan Kwasnycia (1-0) collected the win, pitching the seventh inning and allowing one run with a strikeout.
In game two, the Beavers started strong and then battled back late for the win. In the first inning, Cochran got PCC going with a two-run homer to center for the 2-0 lead.
Fort Scott answered back with four runs in the second to take the 4-2 lead. Chase Rollings and McNulty answered in the home half of the second, with Rollings driving in one with a single through the left side and then McNulty put PCC back on top with a two-run homer to center for the 5-4 lead.
The Greyhounds strung together the next six runs, plating three in the third, one in the fourth and two more in the fifth to open the 10-5 advantage.
PCC began to chip away with a Glaspy RBI double in the fifth. Tyler Jeffries scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to leave the deficit at three entering the seventh. The inning opened with a fielding error by the shortstop. Ronald Woods kept the line moving with a single to center to put runners at first and second. After a strikeout, Rollings reached on an infield single, but the throw from second got away, with the error bringing in Glaspy with the eighth run for the Beavers. A groundout back to the pitcher followed for the second out. McNulty battled to a full-count before he walked to load the bases. That set the stage again for Schmidt. Schmidt roped the pitch into deep left-center to clear the bases, driving in all three runs, and sending Pratt Community College to the walk-off 11-10 win in game two.
PCC outhit FSCC 12-6, with Schmidt and Rollings tallying a pair of three-hit games. Jeffries added two hits. Schmidt drove in three runs, with McNulty adding two RBI. On the mound, Thomas Harmsworth started and got the no decision after tossing the first two innings, allowing four earned runs with a strikeout. Jackson Feggi was next in relief, going two innings, allowing four earned runs with four strikeouts. Ian Vandepol (1-0) went the final three innings to get the win, allowing two earned runs and striking out four.
PCC will turn right back around and face Fort Scott this coming Saturday on the road with another doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
